Box Culverts

McCann Concrete Products specializes in manufacturing box culverts. These box culverts are designed to efficiently manage stormwater and provide a durable, long-lasting solution for drainage needs. They come in various sizes and configurations, offering flexibility for different applications, such as road and bridge construction, waterway management, and underground utilities. McCann’s box culverts are known for high-quality construction, ease of installation, and ability to withstand the demands of heavy traffic and environmental conditions, making them a trusted choice for infrastructure projects.

Box Culverts: Standard vs. Non-Standard

Standard box culvert sizes are found in the ASTM C1577 design standard. This specification covers single-cell precast reinforced concrete box sections cast monolithically and intended to be used for the construction of culverts and for the conveyance of stormwater, industrial wastes, and sewage.

Standard sizes range from 2’x2′ to 12’x12′ and can be designed for up to 30′ of cover for normal highway traffic loading. These boxes are suitable for most projects and can be designed and constructed without project specific design.

Non-standard sizes may have a larger span/rise than shown in ASTM C1577, heavier loading, or require unique piece layout. Regardless of your situation, McCann Concrete Products has an option to fit your need. Below are a number of non-standard box culvert options we offer.

Standard

  • Available in standard sizes from 2’x2’ up to 12’x12’
  • ASTM C1577: Precast reinforced concrete monolithic box sections for culverts, storm drains, and sewers designed according to AASHTO LRFD
  • Precast reinforced concrete box sections produced with tongue and groove ends
  • Standard highway loading does not require special design/engineer seal

Oversized

  • For any size that exceeds ASTM C1577
  • Eliminates center wall in muli-cell structures – no closure pour or connection between runs.
  • Large clear span leads to lower maintenance costs – no hangups or clogged culverts
  • Custom design for project size and loadings

Three-sided Structures

  • Use for extra wide spans
  • Prevents disruption of natural stream bed
  • Construct around utilities, roads, or rails that cannot be interrupted

Split-cell

  • Each section is split into an upper and lower half
  • Eliminates oversized and escorted hauling
  • Lighter piece weights
  • Allows access for inside-of-culvert construction – stream bed reconstruction, paved trails/roads, or utility work
  • Custom designed for site and project loadings

Multi-cell

  • Multi-cell box culvert sections cast monolithically
  • Less pieces to install vs individual multi-cell culverts
  • Eliminates closure pour between runs

Special Loadings

  • For depths greater than 30′
  • For loadings greater than standard highway loadings – railroad, airport, etc.

Box Culvert Uses & Applications

  • Stormwater Control
  • Short Span Bridges
  • Wildlife Crossings
  • Pedestrian Tunnels
  • Utility Tunnels
  • Retention and Detention Systems
